La Torre delle Quattro Porte, come popolarmente viene chiamata la torre che sarebbe più corretto chiamare di Reale (da ricollegarsi probabilmente alla voce tardolatina "rivalis" derivante dal latino rivus cioè fiume), è uno dei più spettacolari esempi di edificio medievale turriforme presenti a Vicopisano.
Complessivamente la torre è alta 15 m. ed ha dimensioni alla base di 6.4x6.4 m. La sua caratteristica principale gli è conferita dall'essere al tempo stesso torre di guardia e porta di ingresso del castello (l'unica ancora conservata), per cui su ciascuno dei quattro lati della torre si apre una porta con arco a sesto acuto, che anticamente consentivano l'ingresso all'interno e la circolazione lungo le mura del castello.
Particolare ancora conservato sono i due cardini in pietra di grosse dimensioni posti sul lato Nord, sui quali nel medioevo si articolavano le massicce porte del castello. Proprio per il fatto di essere una porta, e quindi uno dei principali bersagli degli attacchi nel periodo medievale, la torre presenta ben 4 fasi principali di costruzione, evidenziate anche dal differente uso di materiale: il verrucano ed il laterizio.
Queste fasi variano dalla costruzione, databile alla fine del XII sec., sino all'ultimo intervento del XV sec., dopo la conquista fiorentina. La torre ha subito un restauro della merlatura nel 1939.
Un particolare poco noto: la torre ha rischiato di essere distrutta verso la fine del '700, mentre venivano abbattute le mura sul lato ovest. Infatti stava per essere venduta dal Comune ad un privato, che aveva il manifesto scopo di distruggerla. Fortunatamente si decise di concederla in affitto, con l'espresso vincolo di conservarne intatte le quattro aperture.

Overall, the tower is 15 m. and it has the base dimensions of 6.4x6.4 m.
Its main feature is granted to it being at the same time watch tower and entrance door of the castle (the only one still preserved), whereby each of the four sides of the tower opens a door with a pointed arch, which originally allowed entry into and movement along the walls of the castle; still particularly preserved are the two stone pillars of big dimensions placed on the North side, on which in the Middle Ages were articulated the massive doors of the castle.
Precisely because of being a door, and then one of the main targets of attacks in the medieval period, the tower has a 4 main stages of construction, also highlighted by the different materials used: the verrucano and brick.
These steps vary from building, dating from the late twelfth century.
To the last intervention of the XV sec., after the Florentine conquest, the tower has undergone a restoration of the battlements in 1939.
A little-known: the tower was in danger of being destroyed in the late '700, while the walls on the west side were torn down.
In fact it was about to be sold by the municipality to an individual, which had the express purpose of destroying it.
Fortunately it was decided to grant it for rent, with the express constraint to preserve the four openings intact.
